Sometimes we get lucky enough to sneak in an early spring cold weather crop here....
it depends on various factors, all of which we're fairly unknowledgeable, so "luck" truly describes it!
The girls always get excited about seeding something---
anything, so we usually give it a try late February each year!
The few things we seeded (I say "we" like I helped...I actually mostly only bought the stuff, took the pictures, and said "RyDaddy, plant this!!!") sprouted like crazy....these next pics were taken less than a week later. I'm pretty sure the fluorescent light I found at the Goodwill helped them along!
We tried to transplant the pea sprouts into the garden;
(the awesome trellises were created by Sampa)
(the awesome trellises were created by Sampa)
They didn't make it, and I was later informed by Dennis Hill at Bookcliff Gardens, that peas need to be seeded directly into the ground, not transplanted......So RyDaddy got some pea seeds into the ground, as well as some lettuce & kale seeds and a few other transplants for me that we bought from Bookcliff Gardens......nice little transplants of brussel sprouts, broccoli, & cauliflower. Dennis jokingly says that Bookcliff Gardens loves people like me....who get that early spring bug to plant something, buy the seeds, seed things way too early, and then come in and buy the transplants! Oh well, we'll see what happens and here's hoping for some fresh salad before too long! And to include Sammy a bit: he's most excited about his new "spring frogs!" He would actually love to be digging in the garden with everyone else, if Mama would just let him get out of the tub!
